Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter doesn’t properly close permitting acid from the stomach to reflux back up the esophagus which could cause burning of the esophageal lining. Acid reflux is a sensation of burning customarily in the chest area just behind the breast bone. Acid reflux is frequently more unpleasant when bending over or lying down. It is not something to be worried about if you have heartburn sometimes. It can be handled simply with over-the-counter medicines and making some lifestyle changes.

Acid reflux, also known as heartburn, is a condition wherein acid-containing gastric juices come back into the esophagus from the belly. The lower part of the esophagus contains a valve at the end, called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES for short, which opens in order to let the food we eat get into the belly, and then shutting to keep the gut juices and food within the stomach. When this valve relaxes too often or does not shut correctly, it may end up in the stomach juices getting into the esophagus, which isn’t supplied to address the acidic matter. When this happens it leads to the tell tale signs of heartburn, with a burning sensation in the area.
